Michael Plank, Beacon Director at Dr. George Washington Carver Beacon Community School

Michael joins Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco with several years of mentoring and program management experience. After graduating from Willamette University with his Bachelor’s in Sociology, he spearheaded the creation of the Oregon College Mentors in Salem, Oregon. The program brought tremendous support and resources for at-risk youth in the Salem-Keizer Public School District. Thereafter, he ventured into the world of college basketball coaching, where he continued his role as a mentor for young adults. As a basketball coach, one of his greatest achievements was helping his players balance rigorous athletic schedules, academic responsibilities, and personal growth and development. In 2016, Mike took his passion for serving others a step further by obtaining his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. He is excited to return to education to help make an impact for youth by providing support and guidance.

Here are some appreciations from his Director, the San Francisco Beacon Initiative:

“Michael has jumped right in and established himself as thoughtful and and skilled leader at the BGCSF Beacon @ George Washington Carver. He has assembled a strong team of youth development professionals that have seen early success in building relationships students, families and the Carver ES staff. We are excited to have him as part of the BGCSF family and look forward to more success at Carver ES.” – Brian Sauer, Director of Citywide Education of Boys and Girls Club SF

“Michael’s leadership is going to add great value to his school community. He brings a diverse set of skills and experiences, is thoughtful and starts with listening. We are lucky to have Michael in the Beacon network!” – Sally Jenkins-Stevens, Associate Director of SFBI

Thank you for your passion and dedication to this work, Michael!
