Beacons Celebrate 20 Years!

Beacons started in 1994 when a group of visionary leaders from the public and private sectors brought the New York Beacon model back to SF and adapted it for our unique city, bringing it to key neighborhoods and communities. The first Beacon Center opened in 1996, and it continued to expand throughout the 90s. Today, 8 Beacon Centers across San Francisco serve 10,000 children, youth, and families every year - making it the largest youth development effort in the Bay Area.To honor this momentous occasion, we're taking over Civic Center Plaza on October 10th, 2014 to bring the best of Beacons to life with performances, demonstrations, learning stations, and more! All 8 Beacon centers will be exhibiting a range of activities and resources in STEM, health and fitness, enrichment, and arts, along with demonstrations from several Beacon partners including Bay Area Wilderness Training, California Academy of Sciences, Coaching Corps, Mission Graduates, Loco Bloco, One Degree, and the San Francisco Expanded Learning Collaborative. Please join us! The event will kick off at 4:30 with a press conference on the steps of City Hall to hear from city leaders on the importance of Beacons and expanded learning in San Francisco. The festivities will run from 5-7pm with a variety of booths showcasing Beacon activities. All are welcome at this community event.Got questions? Please email sfbeacon@dcyf.org.
