New Beacon Opening at Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School!
The Beacon Initiative is thrilled to share the news that a new Beacon Center will be opening at the Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School in Fall 2015. This exciting opportunity is made possible by the support and commitment of the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families and the San Francisco Unified School District.The news was officially announced on Thursday, March 19th by Mayor Ed Lee at a press conference at the school site, which is currently undergoing renovation in preparation for re-opening in the fall. He was joined by former mayor Willie Brown, as well as SFUSD Superintendent Richard Carranza and District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen. The incoming principal of WBMS, Principal Demetrius Hobson, led attendees on a tour of the school to highlight the unique aspects of the school and its STEM-focused curriculum, including a state of the art science lab, media lab, and maker space. It presents a unique opportunity to play a role in establishing an innovative, full-service community school from the ground up. The Beacon Initiative will support the launch of the new Beacon Center to ensure that from the first day of school, youth and families receive the same high-quality programming found at Beacon Centers across the city.Community-based organizations are invited and encouraged to apply to serve as the lead agency for the Beacon Center. The application is available here.
